Whogets.com – you decide who wins

whogets.com LCD panel prize

Recently I came across an interesting web business model in whogets.com. This site has people compete for online prizes. Essentially, you pick an item you like, join the contest, and write why you should get this prize. Users vote and the person with the most votes overall (though semi-finals and finals) wins. The prizes range from DVDs to flat screen LCDs.

The FAQ repeatedly says they won’t spam you or disclose your private information. It looks as though they’re trying to monetize through ads and through a “buy-now” button on their contests. It’s certainly an interesting business model, heck, it could even be fun. We’ll follow whogets.com trajectory with interest.

Jenny, Jenny who can I turn to
You give me something I can hold on to
I know you’ll think I’m like the others before
Who saw your name and number on the wall
Jenny I’ve got your number
I need to make you mine
Jenny don’t change your number
8 6 7-5 3 0 9 (8 6 7-5 3 0 9)
8 6 7-5 3 0 9 (8 6 7-5 3 0 9)

Listen to a 30 second snippet

If you know the tune, then you’ll probably hate me for the rest of the day because it’s nearly impossible to get out of your head (kind of like The Wigglesquack, quack, quack, cockadoodle-do – but I digress.) Why the Tommy Tutone flashback? It seems two businesses have been fighting over the number made famous by Tutone 25 years ago. Interestingly, they’re both plumbing firms.

Clockwork Home Services of Florida has been using a toll free version nationwide while Gem Plumbing & Heating of Rhode Island uses the number in New England. A judge ruled recently in the case that Gem has use of the number in New England. Tutone prefers neither company use the number, but he’s taking no action as yet.

There is no word on which firm employs Jenny and when VH1 plans to do a “Where are they now?” segment on her…

Table for sale with hidden secret

It took me a little while to find it, but find ‘it’ I did. Let’s see if you can see ‘it’ too…Comments welcome with guesses. This is apparently a photo taken to help sell the table and chairs. Good luck!

BTW, if you want to see an interesting new image every day, visit jpg.vu – they’ve only been posting for a month or so, but the images are original and fun.

Shoe Service Sign

OK, so this is a little pun-ny, but it’s also very clever. It’s amazing how frequently we see good advertising that is entertaining in unexpected places – like walking down a street. Too bad more mass media advertisers aren’t nearly this creative or funny…

Airplanes pull over cars sign

Watch out, airplanes will attempt to lift your car? Airplanes crashing through powerlines can be a danger to you too? One thing is sure, when you drive past this sign you’ll look up, which just might be more dangerous than whatever the sign is warning about…
