{"id":75,"date":"2006-07-31T09:28:07","date_gmt":"2006-07-31T17:28:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.montaraventures.com\/blog\/?p=75"},"modified":"2006-07-31T09:28:07","modified_gmt":"2006-07-31T17:28:07","slug":"smart-clothes-geek-chic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montaraventures.com\/blog\/2006\/07\/31\/smart-clothes-geek-chic\/","title":{"rendered":"Smart clothes, geek chic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nA couple of my prior entries, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.com\/roller\/page\/mh?entry=bikini_sensors_you_bet\">smart bikini<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.com\/roller\/page\/mh?entry=smartware_no_sensors_no_sun\">buzz off hat<\/a>, were about clothing that was capable of doing a little more than covering us up (yes, I know it was a bikini and a hat) and being stylish. So I set off to discover what else could be categorized in the smartwear world. (Note: I&#8217;m something of an obsessive <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/autodidact\">autodidact<\/a>, once something like this interests me, it becomes my mission to learn everything possible about it.)<\/p>\n<p>\nWhenever I explore a new area like this, I find it helpful to establish some sort of framework to view the area through. My initial explorations have led me to establish some high-level categories to lump smart clothing innovations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Material innovations\n<ul>\n<li>Phase Change &#8211; Uses phase changes (solid to liquid) for benefit\n<li>Shape Memory &#8211; Uses current to form (or reform) to a set shape\n<li>Chromic &#8211; Uses external stimulus (light, heat, liquid, pressure) to change properties (color is most frequent)\n<li>Conductive &#8211; Uses high metallic content to gain benefit (insulation, EMI shield, sensing, etc.)\n<\/ul>\n<li>Integration innovations\n<ul>\n<li>Energy &#8211; Photovoltaic (solar) cells, batteries, and hand generators\n<li>Electronic\/Communication &#8211; mobile communication devices, ipods, and gps with an emphasis on hands-free\n<li>Chemical &#8211; Weatherproofing, insect repellent, and stain resistance\n<li>Sensor &#8211; Primarily medical or athletic performance monitoring sensors\/devices\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I learn more, no doubt these categories will be revised, but this is the starting place.
