Or what the rectangular cuts in the roadway were? Well, they&#8217;re probably sensors. Ever wondered how they&#8217;re used? Here&#8217;s a great example: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.511.org\">511.org<\/a> and another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dot.ca.gov\/dist4\/realtime.htm\">CalTrans Realtime Traffic Cameras<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nHere&#8217;s a realtime traffic load map from 511.org:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/traffic.511.org\/homepage.gif\"><\/p>\n<p>\nYou can also meld technology like route planning with real-time sensor information to factor the most time effective <a href=\"https:\/\/traffic.511.org\/traffic_text3.asp?city=Half+Moon+Bay&#038;main=CA-1&#038;cross=CA-92&#038;origin=763&#038;originCity=Menlo+Park&#038;originMain=CA-84+E&#038;originCross=WILLOW+RD\">way to get to your destination<\/a>. Pretty cool stuff.<\/p>\n<p>\nEarlier this week <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.com\/roller\/page\/jayl\">Jay<\/a> posted a great <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.com\/roller\/page\/jayl?entry=sensors_where_you_least_expect\">blog entry<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.championchip.com\/chips\/\">ChampionChip<\/a> &#8211; a sensor for the athlete. Wouldn&#8217;t it be interesting to mix that capability into vehicles and combine it with the services and sensors from 511.org? Those of you who are privacy sensitive are likely saying &#8220;no freaking way!&#8221; As with all tools, it can be used for good and evil.
