Obnoxious Visual Editor

11.07.07 | Comment?

So, you’ve upgraded to WordPress 2.x and the visual editor has now entered your life, I’m sorry.

While I generally love many things about WordPress, the visual editor is not one of those things. In fact, it’s one of the most obnoxious “innovations” unleashed on the blogging world from my perspective. Example: You want to place an image in-line inside a <div> tag, you have to switch to code mode to do it. You press save, and all the formatting of your code is ripped out. The <div> tag is replaced with <p> tags and you’re left to struggle with fooling the editor to do what you want it to do.

So friends, there is an easier way, simply disable the visual editor. How do you do that you might ask? Logically, one would do so from Options>Writing looking for a visual editor tab, but one wouldn’t find it there in the management interface. No, you have to think User. Go to User>Edit a User>Uncheck the “Use Visual Editor” button and then save the changes. Not every innovation represents an advance, and the visual editor is definitely one of these times. If you must include it in the software, for pete’s sake, turn it off by default WordPress!
